Great Chieftain

Dear colleagues

St Mungo’s and Vulnerable Migrants

Many thanks to all of you who attended the meeting with Emma Haddad and Stephanie Ratcliffe today, which was jointly hosted by the BAME Network and Unite. I think the event was invaluable and hope you thought so too, even though, inevitably, there wasn’t time for all the questions that people wanted to ask.

Unite believes in St Mungo’s role as a charity which works for its clients, not a corporatised organisation that does the bidding of the Home Office. It was Unite which first exposed the inappropriate collaboration between St Mungo’s and deportation teams in the past, resulting in a court ruling that both St Mungo’s and the Home Office had acted unlawfully. We will continue to monitor St Mungo’s activities in this area in the future, and will have no hesitation in speaking out if needed.

I’ve attached information about an upcoming event in the antiracist calendar on 4 Feb. Please try to attend the conference if you can, forward the info to others and put the poster up where you work.

Campaigning for decent pay and conditions

Unite’s panel meeting on campaigns for decent pay and conditions will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm. Workers – and especially Unite members – have been winning one pay campaign after another over the past year and it’s great to hear about what other workers have achieved and are still fighting for. Here’s the link to attend the meeting:

The very recent win by Shelter workers is particularly pleasing, but I can’t say it’s the most recent any more, because more wins have been achieved since then! See you tomorrow at 7.

Happy Burns Night

I’ll sign off now as the Great Chieftain (vegan in this household) is waiting. A very enjoyable Burns Night to all who celebrate – have an extra dram for me and I’ll do the same for you.

Best wishes

Jacob
