If you’re a member of St Mungo’s Unite, you should have received an email allowing you to vote in the current rep election. You probably will have got the email a little after 7pm on 17 March. Its subject line is Apology for Oversight in Rep Election and it comes from member.servicesLE@unitemailings.org on behalf of Charlene White.
Please ignore any voting emails sent before 17 March as they contain an error.
These are the candidates I am asking you to vote for:
Elesha Garvie
Sharon Gott
Anna Greensted-Payne
Patrick Maher
Max Purcell
Ian Rowe
I have spent time talking to each of the above candidates and I am convinced they will carry out the work of being a rep in a way which serves members individually and collectively.
I was somewhat concerned by the approach of some candidates (not any of the above) at this evening’s hustings, who would have wanted last year’s strike to continue even longer than it did. If the shop had taken this course, it would have done great long-term harm to St Mungo’s and its clients, and would not have helped our cause of better wages and conditions for our members.
I knew that going on strike last May was the right decision – it was what I had been working for since being elected convenor. I knew there would be a cost for members, their families, St Mungo’s and its clients and I believed it was worth the cost. But each day on strike, you have to weigh everything in the balance as you decide what negotiating position to take. Our win was a big improvement in terms and conditions for workers and improves St Mungo’s ability to support its clients.
The 6 people above that I’ve nominated bring different strengths to the reps’ team and their abilities will complement each other very well. Between them, they have a great range of experience and knowledge. One thing they have in common is that they take a balanced approach to trade unionism and they will not forget that the members must always come first.
These are my thoughts after tonight’s hustings. If members have any questions, please get in touch.
The ballot closes at 6pm this Friday 29th March.
