Re-elect Sharon Graham

All Unite members should have received a ballot paper by now for the General Secretary election. A Freepost envelope is provided with the ballot paper so it doesn’t cost anything to vote.

I will be voting to re-elect Sharon Graham. Not because I agree with her about everything – I have disagreements on important issues with Sharon and some of her supporters on the Executive Committee.

Nevertheless, the changes she and her colleagues have brought to the union have been exactly what we needed, and we need them to continue. One of Sharon’s first actions as GS was to double the rate of strike pay, and the resources of the union have been made available to workers in dispute as never before. This has resulted in industrial wins and hundreds of millions more in the pockets of organised workers.

Before Sharon’s election, the old guard at the union somehow managed to spend £112 million of members’ money on a hotel which was then valued at only £29 million. Since then, they have taken an obstructive approach, blocking co-operation on the Executive Committee and making misleading claims about Unite’s finances. They are not the future of the union.

We’ve come a long way since Sharon’s election, and we need to continue in that direction. Please vote to re-elect Sharon Graham.
