Dear colleagues
What is the difference between a Transformation Change Manager and a Transformation Programme Manager?
At St Mungo’s, the difference is that one of these new roles is overpaid (£59,000pa), while the other is more overpaid (£70,000pa).
Are these managers going to be changing transformations or transforming changes? Since ‘transformation’ and ‘change’ mean much the same, it’s hard to tell what managing the transformation of change would actually mean. In any case, the creation of highly paid new roles of dubious value is one of the changes occurring right now at St Mungo’s.
While frontline workers are undervalued and underpaid, the number of highly paid posts is increasing. In 2021/22, St Mungo’s top 32 employees were paid a total of £2.7 million between them. This year looks likely to be worse.
You may remember that when the St Mungo’s Leadership Team met us at ACAS, £145,000 a year was the total value of the consolidated offer they made across the whole organisation. They told us that was all they could afford.
If you ask St Mungo’s dedicated, essential workers what kind of transformation St Mungo’s needs, you will get some thoughtful, intelligent answers. ‘More overpaid non-jobs’ is not one of them.
As these newly created roles take their toll on St Mungo’s balance sheets, the organisation will become more top-heavy than before. What effect will this have on front-line services? Mainly, it will take money away from them.
You might remember that when they tell you that your real terms pay cut is unavoidable because there is no money left.
Best wishes
Jacob
