Solidarity with railway workers

Dear Friends

Our allies in the RMT will be taking industrial action on the railways tomorrow

While this will cause inconvenience, railway workers are not at fault for the strike, nor for the fact that UK railway services are among the worst in Europe. Privatised railways charge harshly inflated fares and absorb significant amounts of public funding, but all this money is not reflected in the services offered. Funds are drained into handouts to shareholders.

Those of us with long memories recall that the John Major Government sold off the railways, then valued at £30 billion, for only £2 billion. The Government did not act in the interests of workers, travellers or taxpayers, but of those with the money to buy shares. Plus ça change…

The RMT members taking action on the railways are not well paid, contrary to some claims circulating on social media. They are essential but inadequately paid workers, just like us. If you see them on the picket lines tomorrow, give them a comradely thumbs up and find another way to get to work. The more we stand together, the stronger we will be.

best wishes

Jacob
