“If Cathy were around today, she would be on the [Shelter] picket line.”
Ken Loach, director of Cathy Come Home
Dear colleagues
Imagine working for an organisation which is
- a housing charity that pushes its own workers into housing insecurity by cutting their real wages
- an organisation which claims one of its aims is ‘to relieve poverty’ but many employees have to claim means-tested benefits just to get by
- exploiting front-line employees while those at the top walk off with six-figure salaries
- trying to claim that it has no money while its published accounts show cash reserves several million in excess of the target figure.
OK, it’s not that hard to imagine.
After tolerating these abuses for a long time, our comrades at Shelter have finally resorted to strike action, for two weeks starting from today. They deserve our support and solidarity.
Pickets will be taking place at the following sites:
26-28 Ramsgate Street, London E8 2NA
88 Old Street, London EC1V 9HU
Brunswick Square, Bristol BS2 8PE
More information about picketing and protests is on Shelter Unite’s facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/UniteAtShelter
If you have time (not while on work time for St Mungo’s), please drop by the picket lines and let them know they have our support. If you happen to have any Unite placards or banners, please take them along.

Nothing will be achieved in this sector by attacking workers’ standard of living. It is time we stand up together and insist that we are properly paid for the vital work that we do.
Best wishes,
Jacob
