Not all questions require an answer

Dear colleagues

The strike ballot has not even concluded yet and already we are getting reports of managers being told to ask their team members whether they are planning to join the strike.

You are not obliged to answer this question.

If you like, you can just say you don’t want to answer, or if you prefer, you can say that you will be coming into work, but change your mind when the strike begins.

Other possible responses are

  • My wages are nearly as much as strike pay – why on Earth would I want to go on strike?
  • I actually think it’s a really good idea that St Mungo’s workers should be rewarded for our dedication with a real-terms pay cut. That’s how you make essential workers feel really appreciated.
  • The important thing is that directors’ pay keeps going up so that they can upgrade from 8 bedrooms to 12. It may not solve the housing crisis at once, but you have to start somewhere.

If your manager approves of any or all of the above replies, you may want to end the conversation there. If not, you can send him or her this weblink

In any case, none of the above responses will stop you from making your own decision on the day, and the law will still protect your right to take part in a lawful strike.

Best wishes

Jacob
