Dear colleagues
A very Happy New Year to all of you.
Can I take this opportunity to remind you that you are doing a vitally important job protecting the most vulnerable people in our society, and that you deserve all the appreciation you get, and a great deal more?
I don’t need to tell you that last year was marked by conflict between workers and bosses at St Mungo’s, with the strike lasting a quarter of the year.
We can be immensely proud of our achievement in organising the strike and bringing it to a successful conclusion, with a £1200 pay rise, 3 extra days’ annual leave and other improvements. That win places St Mungo’s near the top of the range for employers in our sector.
I expect that in 2024, relations between workers and management at St Mungo’s will be less marked by conflict than in 2023.
We will still fight your corner whenever workers’ interests are at stake. That includes opposing redundancies in all cases other than where a worker wishes to accept redundancy.
But because of the improvements we won last year, there may be more opportunities for co-operation than before, if management – as well as the union – are willing to take them.
I wish you the very best for 2024 and hope to see you at a union meeting soon.
In comradeship
Jacob
