Dear colleagues
I hope you’re all well and looking forward to some well-deserved rest over the Christmas period.
While the main issue of non-payment of the NJC and strike win increases has been dealt with, we know that a few workers are still having issues. If you think you still haven’t got the right amount, please get in touch and Unite will support you to get what you’re entitled to.
While a consultation on redundancies in central services is expected to start in January, teams elsewhere are facing redundancy processes already. Unite will oppose each and every redundancy unless a member chooses to accept redundancy. We are fighting redundancies in the Assertive Contact and Engagement (ACE) team in Bristol by urging Bristol City Council to maintain its funding of the service. We will use political lobbying whenever we think it will help defend jobs. If you live in Bristol, I hope you will consider contacting your Councillors to ask them to think again – reps will be in touch.
The Unite reps team is considering proposals that future elections for reps will be on a constituency basis. We are still working on the details of this but the decision on whether to adopt the new system will, of course, be for you. The proposals will be finalised and an electronic ballot of members next summer will decide whether to make the change, in time for the new election early in 2025. Your reps’ team has also made a unanimous decision that the convenors will continue to be directly elected by an electronic ballot of members. I completely agree with this decision. Convenors are elected to work on behalf of members, and the decision on whether I deserve to keep the job is one that every member is entitled to take part in. While constitutional issues are important, we know that our first responsibility is to represent members. That will always be our priority.
Best wishes,
Jacob
